The American Enterprise Institute is calling America's rapidly declining fertility rates "an existential crisis." The think tank reports: "currently, the fertility rate in the US is around 1.6, significantly below the replacement rate of 2.1." Economic pressures, lifestyle choices such as delayed marriage and childbearing, and environmental factors including endocrine-disrupting chemicals all are factors in the decline. The U.S. is not alone in its predicament. Japan has implemented a four-day work week; China has changed its one-child policy to a three-child policy in an effort to reverse decline in birth rates.
